„Der Schuh der aus der Blüte kommt“ – die schuhförmige Blüte verleiht der Pflanze diesen Namen. Diese Orchidee ist eine sensible Art und liebt halbschattige Auwälder. In Europas größtem zusammenhängenden Frauenschuhgebiet, den Lechauen bei Martinau, besiedelt sie den wasserdurchlässigen Kalkschotterboden des Kiefern- Trockenauwaldes.
